Football Prices: The Problem of the Draw
Reading from India: online betting for money is an online money game under the Online Gaming Act 2025 and has been prohibited since 1 May 2026. This page explains how prices work; it is not betting advice.
Football has a large following in India, from the Indian Super League to the European leagues watched late at night. Its prices have one structural feature that sets them apart from cricket and tennis: a match can end level, so the basic market has three outcomes rather than two.
Three outcomes, one margin
The standard football market is written 1X2 — home win, draw, away win. Take a sample set of prices: home 1.95, draw 3.50, away 4.00. The implied probabilities are 51.3%, 28.6% and 25.0%, adding up to 104.9%. The 4.9 extra points are the margin, spread across the three outcomes. Because there are three outcomes to price, football's main market often carries a slightly wider margin than a two-way cricket or tennis market.
Removing the draw
Several markets exist to remove the draw. "Draw no bet" returns the stake if the match is drawn, which turns it into a two-outcome market priced lower than a straight win. "Double chance" covers two of the three outcomes, such as home or draw, at an even shorter price. These are the same match sliced in different ways, each with its own margin; none of them changes the underlying probabilities.
| Market | Outcomes covered | If the match is drawn |
|---|---|---|
| 1X2 home win | Home only | Loses |
| Draw no bet, home | Home; draw refunded | Stake returned |
| Double chance, home or draw | Home and draw | Wins |
Handicaps and goal totals
Asian handicaps give one team a goal start, often in half or quarter steps, so that there is no draw and the two sides can be priced near even. Goal totals, such as over or under 2.5 goals, ask only about the number of goals. Both markets are popular because they produce prices near even money, but the margin is still built into each side.
What actually moves football prices
Confirmed line-ups, injuries to key players, a crowded fixture list and the importance of the match to each side move prices more than league tables do. Late-night European matches are priced by markets with enormous volumes, which makes those prices very efficient: the information available to an ordinary viewer is almost always already reflected in them. That is a mathematical point, not an invitation — online betting for money is prohibited in India under the 2025 Act.
