Gambling Apps on Your Phone: Risks and Removal
Since 1 May 2026 online money games are prohibited in India under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025. This edition explains; it does not invite anyone to play for money.
Searches for casino and betting apps are common in India, and so are fake apps. This page does not link to any download. It explains why that is, what the risks of installing gambling apps from unofficial sources are, and how to remove one properly.
Why we do not link to an app
Since 1 May 2026, online money games are prohibited in India, and the Act bans advertising that directly or indirectly promotes them. A download link for a real-money casino app aimed at readers in India would be exactly that kind of promotion. The Act also states that it covers services run from outside India, so an app published abroad is not outside its scope.
How fake APKs work
Many gambling "apps" circulated through messaging groups, social media and video descriptions are APK files installed outside the official app stores. Some are repackaged copies of a real operator's app with added code; others are entirely fake fronts built to collect logins, documents and banking details. Because they bypass store review, they can request permissions a game has no reason to need.
| Permission requested | Why it is a warning sign |
|---|---|
| Read SMS | Can capture one-time passwords sent by your bank |
| Accessibility service | Can read the screen and act on your behalf |
| Contacts | Can be used to spread the app or for harassment |
| Install other apps | Can add further software without asking |
Removing a gambling app completely
- Uninstall the app from your phone's settings, not just from the home screen.
- Turn off "install unknown apps" for the browser or messaging app you used to download it.
- Delete saved passwords for the site from your browser and password manager.
- If you shared banking details, talk to your bank about securing your accounts.
- Change the password of the email linked to the account.
Using the phone to protect yourself
Your phone can work for you as well as against you. Screen-time and content-filter settings can block gambling sites and apps, and parental-control tools work for adults too. Turning off notifications from gambling-related apps and channels removes the prompts designed to bring you back.
