Bet Types and the Arithmetic of the Margin

Reading from India: online betting for money is an online money game under the Online Gaming Act 2025 and has been prohibited since 1 May 2026. This page explains how prices work; it is not betting advice.

Bet types are usually explained as a menu. This page explains them as arithmetic, because the structure of a bet decides how much of the bookmaker's margin it carries. The more prices a bet combines, the more margin it collects — which is why combined bets are promoted so heavily.

The single bet

A single is one outcome at one price, and it carries one margin. If a two-way market is priced at 1.90 on both sides, the true chance of each side is probably close to 50%, which would justify a fair price of 2.00. The difference between 1.90 and 2.00 — about 5% of the payout — is the cost built into a single.

The accumulator: margins multiply

An accumulator combines several selections and multiplies their prices, and every selection must win. The margins multiply too. Five selections at 1.90 combine to about 24.8; if each were a fair coin flip, the fair combined price would be 32.0. Almost a quarter of the fair payout has disappeared.

36.868.00about 14%
524.7632.00about 23%
8169.8256.0about 34%

The chance of all eight coin flips landing is 1 in 256 — about 0.4% — which is why long accumulators are a staple of promotions and screenshots of rare big wins.

System bets

A system bet splits a group of selections into many smaller combinations, so one wrong pick does not lose everything. The cost is a larger total stake, and every small combination still multiplies its own margins. A system bet reduces the swing of an accumulator; it does not remove the margin.

Player and special markets

Markets on individual performances — top batter, number of sixes, a player's points — have many possible outcomes and carry wider margins than match results. Special markets on events weeks away, such as a tournament winner, combine a wide margin with a long wait during which injuries and selection change everything.

What this adds up to

Every bet type is a different way of packaging the same thing: prices that sit slightly below fair value. The packaging can make losses slower or faster, steadier or lumpier, but it cannot remove the edge. In India, online betting for money has been prohibited since 1 May 2026 under the Online Gaming Act 2025; the arithmetic on this page is offered as information.

FAQ

Why do accumulators lose more on average?
Because each selection carries its own margin and the accumulator multiplies them. Five selections at 1.90 pay about 24.8 against a fair 32.0.
What is a system bet?
A bet that splits several selections into many smaller combinations. It reduces the all-or-nothing swing but still multiplies margins in each combination.
Can any bet type overcome the bookmaker's margin?
No. Bet types change how losses are distributed over time, not the margin built into the prices.
