Sports Markets: How Prices Are Built
Reading from India: online betting for money is an online money game under the Online Gaming Act 2025 and has been prohibited since 1 May 2026. This page explains how prices work; it is not betting advice.
Odds are quoted everywhere — in cricket coverage, in social media posts, in conversations among friends. This section explains what those numbers mean and how they are constructed, starting with cricket because it dominates sports interest in India. Understanding the arithmetic is useful in itself, and it is also the clearest explanation of why betting, over time, transfers money from bettors to bookmakers.
A price is a probability
Most prices in India are quoted in decimal form. A price of 1.50 means that one unit staked returns 1.50 units if it wins. Divide one by the price to get the probability the bookmaker is implying: 1 ÷ 1.50 is 66.7%. A price of 3.00 implies 33.3%, and a price of 1.05 — common for heavy favourites — implies about 95%.
| Decimal price | Implied probability | Roughly means |
|---|---|---|
| 1.25 | 80% | Wins four times in five |
| 1.80 | 55.6% | Slightly better than even |
| 2.00 | 50% | A coin flip |
| 3.00 | 33.3% | Wins one time in three |
| 6.00 | 16.7% | Wins one time in six |
The margin built into every market
In a two-way market where both sides are priced at 1.90, each implies 52.6%, and together they add up to 105.3%. The extra 5.3 points are the bookmaker's margin. It means the prices on offer are always slightly worse than the true chances, so a bettor has to be right more often than the true probability just to break even. Across hundreds of bets that small gap is what makes betting a losing activity on average.
Live markets
During a match, prices are recalculated after every ball or every point and markets suspend at key moments such as a wicket or a boundary review. Live margins are usually wider than pre-match margins, and the speed of the changes is designed to keep attention locked on the screen.
The position in India
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 prohibits online money games — any game in which a user stakes money expecting winnings — and it states that it applies to services operated from outside India but accessible here. Online sports betting for money falls within that prohibition. No Indian licence exists for it, so no betting site can truthfully describe itself as legal in India. This section therefore contains no tips, no staking plans and no offers. For help with gambling, Tele MANAS answers free on 14416, around the clock.
