Self-Exclusion and Breaks: Options in Canada

Self-exclusion is the strongest tool available to someone who wants to stop gambling for a while. In Canada the options depend on the province and on the type of site you use. This page sets them out, from the lightest to the most complete.

Ontario: one opt-out for every regulated site

Ontario has a centralised self-exclusion program, BetGuard. A single registration excludes you from all regulated Ontario iGaming sites at once. According to the AGCO's bulletin on the program, the available terms are 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Because it applies across the regulated market, it closes the gap that operator-by-operator exclusion leaves open: moving from one site to another.

Elsewhere: operator and lottery-corporation programs

Outside Ontario, self-exclusion is handled by each operator or provincial lottery corporation. You exclude yourself from each site separately, usually through the responsible gambling section of the account or by contacting support. An exclusion with one operator does not apply to another, so if you use several sites you need to exclude from each of them.

Lighter steps before full exclusion

ToolWhat it doesTypical length
Deposit or loss limitCaps money in, or net lossesOngoing, adjustable with a delay
Time-outLocks the account for a short fixed periodDays to weeks
Self-exclusionCloses access for a long fixed periodMonths to years

Self-exclusion cannot normally be lifted early, and support staff cannot override it. That is the point: the decision is protected from the moment that might reverse it.

Blocking at the device and bank level

Exclusion closes accounts; blocking closes doors. Blocking software can stop gambling sites and apps on a phone or computer, and some banks let customers block gambling transactions on their cards. Combining an exclusion with a block covers sites you have never used before, which exclusions alone do not.

Talking to someone

You do not need to decide alone. In Ontario, ConnexOntario answers free and confidentially at any hour on 1-866-531-2600. In British Columbia, the Gambling Support BC Line is 1-888-795-6111; in Quebec, Jeu : aide et référence is 1-800-461-0140. Gambling Therapy offers free online support anywhere.
